Holy Monastery Prophet Ilias in Chrisso

The majestic monastery of Prophet Ilias is located at an altitude of 500 m, at the road between Delphi and Chrisso. It is built northwest of Chrisso, in a distance of 7 km. and it proudly stands gazing up to the mountains of Peloponnisos.
It used to be a base and a shelter for the fighters of the East Central Greece during the Greek War of Independence. On the 24th of March 1821 the flag of Revolution was raised and 30 from the total 100 Monks of the Monastery participated in the battles and died as heroes.
Today the visitor can admire mostly the wooden carved iconostasis of the monastery, with representations from the Old and the New Testament as well as its precious library, with handwritten documents and letters during the revolution.
