The Ancient Theatre is located at the northwest part of the temple of Apollo and at its courtyard.
Historians believe that in the beginning the theatre had wooden seats, yet they do not exclude that the audience might sit directly at the ground.
The theatre took its today form with stone seats in the 4th century B.C. while other repairs followed.
When entering the theatre today, the visitors can observe that it is divided in two zones, the higher having 8 lines of seats and the lower 27 while radial scales divide the theatre into six galleries the above one and seven the below, with a total capacity of 5.000 viewers.
During the ancient years, the reputation of the theatre was the same with the ancient stadium in Olympia, as it housed vocal and instrumental music games that were carried out for the Pythian Games and other religious celebrations and ceremonials offering the monument a spiritual and artistic value.
The state of the theatre today, despite all the works that have been carried out through time, presents many damages and many of its pieces are scattered around the whole temple.
