Mariolata is located at the foot of the northwestern side of Parnassos at an altitude of 380m. and has approximately 600 permanent residents.
Its ancient name was Boion or Boion and according to Thucydides, it was part of the ancient Doric Tetrapolis. Then and until 1960 it was called Haradra, because of the location where the village was then.
The current village was built in another location and its name, according to legend, comes from the "Marioles", who were holy women of the Oracle of Delphi or from the Virgin Mary Mariolatra located in the area.
Sights
The ruins of the acropolis and the ancient buildings which were declared protected monuments in 1982 by the General Directorate of Antiquities, the "Old Village" with the church of the Nativity of the Virgin and the ravine with the steep rocks, are the most important attractions of the village.
For hiking enthusiasts, Barutospilia, one of the largest caves in Greece, is located near the village. The Hani of Gravia at a distance of only 5 km, as well as the sources of Boiotiko Kifisos of Agia Eleussa, at a distance of 7 km on the road to Polydrosos.
